Choosing export packaging that survives a six-week voyage

Why packaging that works in a domestic market often fails at sea, and what to specify instead.

Ocean freight is a stress test. Containers swing between 20 and 55 degrees Celsius, humidity condenses on the roof and pallets carry load for weeks. Packaging that performs well in a local distribution run can arrive collapsed or stained.

Specify laminate structures with a moisture barrier for powders and spices, food grade liners inside PP sacks for grains and pulses, and corrugation strength matched to your stack height rather than to the cheapest available carton. Add desiccant where the destination is tropical, and shrink wrap retail packs into trays so mixed pallets stay square.

Finally, agree the artwork before you agree the price. Re-printing laminate after approval is the single most common cause of a delayed first order.
